i go into wild oats (for those who don't know, wild oats is a natural foods grocery store) to pick up a birthday treat for holly, who turns 27 tomorrow. i go over to the bakery department, and peer into the glass case. there are a variety of products available, each with a label listing the ingredients. i begin scrutinizing each label to see if anything in the case is vegan.

the bakery department guy comes over.

BDG: "are you all set there?"

me: "do you have any vegan desserts in here?"

BDG: "what kind of desserts?"

me: "vegan."

BDG: "what's that?"

me: "vegan? you want to know what vegan is?" (guy nods) "well, it's when you don't eat any animal product."

BDG: "none of these have meat in them."

me: "yeah, but vegan means no milk, eggs, butter...that kind of thing."

BDG: "REALLY?" (look of sheer astonishment on his face)

me: "um, yeah..."

BDG: "so like, all these things have that stuff in them!"

me: "that's what i'm noticing, reading these labels..."

BDG: "damn! so then what do they eat?"

me: "um, well, vegetables, grains, fruit, soy stuff, mushrooms, nuts, beans..."

BDG: "jeez. well, that's just...wow. yeah, well, that really sucks."
