Jul. 9th, 2003 03:14 pmI've been doing some work with BARCC to increase awareness of the recent MA budget cuts and how they affect rape crisis centers around the state.
Funding for rape crisis services was cut 75% for the Fiscal Year 2004 (7/1/03-6/30/04). This means that 13 out of 18 rape crisis centers in the state will likely be forced to close, the Spanish-speaking rape crisis hotline will probably be shut down, and the centers that stay open will be forced to reduce their services significantly. These cuts come at a time when more and more people are using the services offered by such centers.
Of course, these cuts only allow more money to be directed into funds to maintain golf courses in the state. Yup, that's right, funding for the maintenance of municipal golf courses either experienced no changes or actually increased -- by up to 22% (depending on the golf course).
So glad to see that MA and the people who voted for the policymakers who drew up this budget have their priorities in line.
